Therapy or Coaching? How to Know What’s Right for You

Understanding the Support You Need: Therapy vs. Coaching

There’s often confusion about the difference between therapy and coaching—but choosing the right one matters. The type of support you engage in should match your current needs, not just what sounds familiar or convenient.

“You’re allowed to need support and still be strong.” — Shelby Castile, LMFT

In my practice, I offer both therapy and coaching-informed support, depending on where you are and what you’re working through.

My Approach

With 20+ years of experience as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my work is rooted in depth, clarity, and real change.

I specialize in supporting clients with:

  • Anxiety and overthinking patterns

  • Relationship dynamics and codependency

  • Grief and loss

  • Burnout and overcommitment

  • Trauma and unresolved emotional experiences

I integrate:

  • EMDR for trauma processing

  • DBT-informed skills for emotional regulation

  • Attachment-based and relational work

  • Mind-body awareness (including my background as a yoga teacher and doula)

The work is collaborative, direct, and focused on helping you understand your patterns—not just cope with them.

Therapy: Healing at the Root

Therapy is designed for deeper emotional work and meaningful change.

This is often the right fit if you’re dealing with:

  • Persistent anxiety or emotional overwhelm

  • Trauma or painful past experiences

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship patterns that feel hard to break

  • People-pleasing, overgiving, or codependency

  • Difficulty setting or maintaining boundaries

Therapy goes beyond surface-level strategies. We look at the “why” behind your patterns, so you can actually shift them—not just manage them.

If you tend to overextend yourself, feel responsible for others’ emotions, or struggle to slow down, therapy creates the space to unpack that in a supported and structured way.

“We work at the root, not just the symptoms.” — Shelby Castile, LMFT

Coaching: Focused, Forward Movement

Coaching is more goal-oriented and action-based.

This can be a good fit if you:

  • Are feeling stuck in execution but know what you want

  • Are navigating business growth or leadership decisions

  • Need clarity, structure, and accountability

  • Want to build momentum without diving into deeper emotional processing

  • Are already emotionally stable and looking to move forward

Coaching is about helping you move from insight into action.

It’s especially useful for high-functioning individuals who are carrying a lot and need support translating ideas into clear, strategic next steps.

Therapy vs. Coaching: A Clear Distinction

Therapy Coaching

— Focus on healing and emotional depth — Focus on goals and forward action

— Explores past patterns and experiences — Focuses on present and future

— Clinical, licensed support — Non-clinical support

— Ideal for trauma, anxiety, grief, relational work — Ideal for growth, clarity, and execution

Both are valuable—but they serve different purposes.

Which One Is Right for You?

A simple way to think about it:

  • If you’re feeling emotionally overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in patterns → therapy is likely the better fit

  • If you’re clear on your direction but need help executing → coaching may be more aligned

  • If you’re somewhere in between → we can talk through what makes the most sense

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

A Note on High-Functioning Overachievers

A lot of the clients I work with are capable, successful, and highly self-aware—but internally stretched thin.

They often:

  • Take on too much

  • Struggle to say no

  • Feel responsible for everyone else

  • Push through instead of slowing down

  • Feel exhausted but still keep going

If that resonates, the work will focus on helping you build capacity, strengthen boundaries, and reduce internal pressure—without losing your drive or ambition.

“You don’t have to carry everything alone.”
